GRAY AREA

Gray Area is a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco that operates at the intersection of art, technology, and social impact. Its mission is to foster innovative projects that use technology to address societal challenges and inspire cultural growth.
This branding project is guided by five key concepts: Intersection, Connectivity, Digital, Locality, and Futurism. The new identity features a custom modular typeface alongside visual elements inspired by circuits and the seamless flow of electricity. Gradient transitions and linear patterns evoke the blending of disciplines and emphasize Gray Area’s role as a cultural hub, bridging art, technology, and the creative energy of San Francisco.

LOGO SYSTEMI drew inspiration mainly  from circuits for my design, as they reflect Gray Area’s identity—connecting disciplines and enabling the seamless flow of ideas. The new "G" logo and type system incorporate 135-degree angles and sharp turns, echoing circuit paths, while the contrast between thin and thick lines represents binary code, symbolizing the fusion of technology and creativity.

TYPE SYSTEMI created a modular typeface based on the logo G that serves as the key system for the branding.

SECONDARY TYPEFACE SYSTEM
FOR GRAY AREA FESTIVAL
The secondary typeface system is designed based on ‘real-time’ weather data using the Weather API, emphasizing local characteristics.

FOG GENERATOR (Sound On)The Fog Generator is a motion-based tool built with p5.js, creating dynamic digital fog effects that respond to real-time weather data and sensor inputs. Adapting to changes like temperature, wind speed, and humidity, the fog shifts organically, mimicking natural mist or haze.

With this tool, users can experience real-time weather by typing in different cities, with dynamic motion responding to conditions like temperature, visibility, and wind speed, each influencing various slider values.

Aligned with Gray Area’s mission, this project explores how data-driven generative systems create immersive experiences, bridging digital and physical environments through artistic and technological expression.

INSTALLATION: ELECTRIC FOG (Sound On)The Electric Fog is an interactive installation will be showcased during the Gray Area Festival, bridging digital and physical spaces through real-time motion and sensor data. Inspired by circuit patterns and the Gray Area G logo, it transforms live inputs into an ever-shifting, fog-like environment.

Visitors interact using hand gestures near an Arduino light sensor, influencing the speed and movement of the digital fog. As they interact with their hands, the fog distorts and accelerates, blurring the boundary between human presence and computational aesthetics.

For the Gray Area community, Electric Fog embodies the festival’s spirit of merging art, technology, and immersive storytelling. The installation itself serves as a metaphor for Gray Area’s role as a cultural incubator, where ideas, interactions, and technologies converge to redefine creative expression.
